Turning to the environment, Shanghai announced a plan on Monday to further cut its energy consumption and pollutant emissions by 2010.

One major goal is to reduce the city's overall energy consumption by 20 percent for every 10 thousand yuan of GDP, using 2005 as the reference year. Other targets include reducing sulfur dioxide emissions by more than one fourthand increasing the sewage treatment rate to 80 percent.

The municipal government will renovate major coal-fired power plants, industrial boilers, and sewage treatment facilities. Plus, Shanghai will make greater efforts to recycle, with over half the city's garbage to be re-used, double the amount from 2005.

The retail sector is also embracing the green trend. Malls covering more than 5-thousand square meters and restaurants covering more than 3-thousand square meters will be the main targets of these projects. Energy-saving lights, air conditioners, refrigerators and automatic lifts will be installed in these buildings over the next three years. It's expected to cut energy consumption by 15 percent per 10-thousand-yuan of GDP when completed.
